LOCAL HISTORY

Macleod Airfield Properties Welcomes the Alberta Police and Peace Officer's Training Center to Fort Macleod.

This beautiful, quiet expanse is an area so rich with history. You can research events from the past 100 years … right in your own backyard.

Just north of Macleod Airfield Properties, a large railway station was constructed under the guidance of Superintendent Haney. Around this station, Haneyville sprang to life. The station was later moved to follow the new rail line in Fort Macleod and as the railway moved, Haneyville disappeared. Hidden artifacts are just waiting to be uncovered.

Macleod Airfield Properties were also used with the #7 Service Flying Training Center for airmen and women during WWII. The basic training plane was the Avro Anson, which is how the main entrance to the acreages got its name. Even after the war, Lancaster Bombers made their last landings on this historic ground.

And less than 3 kilometers north you'll find the historic Northwest Mounted Police Barracks in Fort Macleod. These replica barracks housed the beginnings of the NWMP and tell the story of a pivotal time for the Blackfoot Confederacy, the NWMP and Southern Alberta.

The town of Fort Macleod is home to Alberta's only Provincial Historic Area. Main Street is dotted with quaint antique and gift shops, motels, museums and restaurants that evoke feelings of a past era coexisting with today. History is yours to uncover around every corner.
